Deciding to report a wrongdoing might be a big decision for you, depending on your circumstances. Here are some resources to help support you to safely make a report of wrongdoing.
Many employers have disclosures policies to create a safe opportunity for workers to speak out. You may wish to check out your own employer's policy first.
Transparency International Ireland is an independent, non-governmental organisation. Transparency International Ireland operates a confidential helpline, and provides access to free legal advice on making a protected disclosure through the Transparency Legal Advice Centre. The Helpline can provide free referrals for professional counselling on request.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) is the single umbrella organisation for most trade unions and they can advise or direct you to your local union support.
The Workplace Relations Commission has prepared a Code of Practice giving guidance and setting out best practice to help employers, workers and their representatives understand the law concerning the disclosure of information regarding wrongdoing in the workplace and how to deal with the disclosure of such information: https://www.workplacerelations.ie . Complaints in relation to penalisation as a result of making a report of wrongdoing in the workplace can be made to the WRC.
The Citizens Information website provides additional information on Protected Disclosures on its page ‘Protection for whistleblowers’: www.citizensinformation.ie .
You may wish to contact your solicitor prior to making a report of wrongdoing.
